Albany, NY – The Albany FireWolves (9-2) are continuing to write their storybook National Lacrosse League (NLL) season as they defeated the New York Riptide 14-8 this past weekend to claim their ninth win of the season. There are so many factors that have gone into this turnaround from a 3-15 mark last year, but let’s take a look at a few of the key numbers that are driving the FireWolves forward to a playoff spot.
4,000 Minutes Played By Doug Jamieson
Over seven NLL seasons, Doug Jamieson has proven himself to be an elite goaltender in this league and his latest accomplishment of playing 4,000 minutes in net further cements his status as a savvy veteran goalie. Since returning from a minor injury, Jamieson has been incredible the past three games as he has posted 45 saves or more in each contest. His saves have come in every fashion as he has stood tall on break aways, dunks from behind, lasers from up top, and every shot teams have thrown at him. Against the Riptide he looked at the top of his game and it will be exciting to watch Dougie help lead the FireWolves to the playoffs.
9 Wins Ties FireWolves’ Season High
With their ninth win of the season this past weekend against the Riptide, the FireWolves have tied their season best win mark since they have been playing in the Capital Region. This incredible turnaround from a 3-15 record last season has made Albany an unlikely championship contender. It is fair to say no one would have predicted the FireWolves to already have 9 wins at this point in the NLL season, but the team’s success can be attributed to the leadership of head coach Glenn Clark and his coaching staff, an incredible group of rookies, and a perfect blend of hardworking and highly skilled players.
61 Points For Alex Simmons Most Ever By A FireWolves Rookie
The FireWolves’ leading scorer and rookie sensation Alex Simmons has continued his torrid scoring pace as he had another big game against the Riptide with 7pts (3 goals, 4 assists). He is now at 61 points in 11 games, which is the most by a rookie since the team relocated to Albany. After a slight slump during the team’s two losses, Simmons has regained the scoring touch that he enjoyed in his first few games. With his ability to get a shot or pass off at any moment with his athleticism and stick skills, Simmons will continue to climb the charts of the rookie record books for the FireWolves and the NLL.
The Albany FireWolves return to action this Friday, March 8 at 7 pm to face the Vancouver Warriors on Indigenous Celebration Night.
