FIREWOLVES DEFENSE IMPRESSIVE DESPITE DEFEAT: BY THE NUMBERS

The Albany FireWolves (2-8) were defeated by the Georgia Swam (2-7), 9-8, at the MVP Arena in Albany on Saturday evening.  The two teams were neck-and-neck all night long, but the Swarm scored in overtime to secure the victory on the road.

The FireWolves offense was led by Hiana Thompson who tallied 5 points on 5 assists in the game.  His efforts moved him up to fifth on the Wolves with 19 total points on the season and he is tied for fourth with 12 assists.  Both Connor Kelly (3 goals, 1 assist) and Kieran McArdle (1 goal, 3 assists) each had 4 points on the night.  Through 10 games, McArdle leads the team in total points (46) and assists (31) and is second in goals (15).  Kelly leads the Wolves with 19 goals, and is behind only McArdle with 41 total points.  Tanner Thomson, Jackson Nishimura, Leo Stouros, John LaFontaine, Jake Fox, and Thomas Vaesen each contributed 1 point in the game.  Thomson ranks second on the team with 23 assists and is third on the team in total points (36), and goals (13).

In net, Doug Jamieson had a solid game despite the loss.  The goalie racked up 52 saved and allowed just 9 goals.  On the season, Jamieson boasts a 77% save percentage and a 12.55 GAA.

On defense, LaFontaine led the team with 8 loose ball recoveries.  Patrick Kaschalk scooped up 7 loose balls, and blocked 1 shot in the game.  Mike Byrne recovered 5 loose balls, blocked 1 shot, and caused 1 turnover.  Nishimura, Stouros, and Colton Watkinson each caused 1 turnover on the night.

Albany’s penalty kill efforts were solid, shutting down 5 of Georgia’s 7 attempts in the game.  On top of that, the FireWolves scored 4 shorthanded goals.
