It was a very happy New Year’s Eve for the Albany FireWolves (4-0) as they pulled out an 11-10 overtime win against the Saskatchewan Rush (1-3) with clutch performances from players all over the floor. Let’s take a look at some of the key numbers that led to the overtime victory and the FireWolves 4-0 start to the 2023-24 National Lacrosse League season.

44 Saves By Doug Jamieson

Jamieson has been one of the biggest factors in the FireWolves’ incredible start and his 44 saves on 54 shots helped shut the door on Saskatchewan’s comeback. He was the difference maker in crunch time as the Rush tied the game at 10-10 with 7 minutes and 24 seconds left in the 4th Quarter. Jamieson would brush off every shot thrown at him and keep the Rush at bay to send the game to overtime. The offense has been the big story of this turnaround from last season, but Jamieson remains the backbone of the team and is shaping up to have one of the best seasons of his career.

Opponent  Saves  Shots  GAA  SV %
Las Vegas  30  40  10.00  75.0%
Buffalo  33  46  13.00  71.7%
Philadelphia  38  48  10.00  79.2%
Saskatchewan  44  54  9.85  81.5%
Total  145  188  10.71  77.1%

88% Faceoff Win Percentage

Every possession mattered as this game went down to the wire and once again the FireWolves dominated the loose ball battles and faceoffs thanks to defenseman Joe Nardella. He won 22 of 25 faceoffs for a tremendous 88% win percentage that allowed Albany to get an early lead and limit the Rush chances down the stretch. The biggest faceoff win came in overtime as he won the clamp and put the ball to a spot where teammate Nick Chaykowsky was able to grab it and secure the possession. This allowed the FireWolves to score 55 seconds into overtime as Ethan Walker scored the game winner on the ensuing possession.

4-0 Start Best In FireWolves History

The FireWolves have already surpassed their win total from last season and their 4-0 start is the best since the team relocated to Albany. The wins have not come easy as the FireWolves have either had to come from behind against Las Vegas and Philadelphia or ward off comebacks against Buffalo and Saskatchewan. Heading into the season, head coach Glenn Clark and the coaching staff expected the team to improve from last year, but no one could have predicted so much early success. The secret sauce has been a combination of young stars emerging on offense, loose ball domination, Jamieson playing well between the pipes, and the players simply outworking the other teams. It will be exciting to watch what this team can do as the season continues.

The FireWolves will be back in action against the Halifax Thunderbirds this Saturday, January 6 at 7 pm ET for Country Night at MVP Arena. The game can be watched on ESPN+, TSN+, and locally on MY4.
